Q) Explain how media language has been used differently to represent/attract the target audience.

A) Within both magazine covers, Top of the Pops and Mojo, media devices have been used in different ways to represent and attract their respective target audiences.

Within the Top of the Pops magazine, the masthead has been used to represent and attract their target audience. This has been achieved through the use of pink, sparkly text in the masthead. This represents the target audience of younger females (under the age of 16) that live in working class or middle class households with the interest in pop music by using colours commonly associated with this target audience. With the use of the sparkles within the text too, this also represents the younger age of the target audience by making it more 'kid-friendly'. But the use of both of these features also attract this same target audience by using colours the target audience would also associate with - pink - which also connotes the female target audience of the magazine. With the addition of the sparkles, this again attracts the target audience by drawing attention to the masthead, in turn attracting the target audience. Although, within the Mojo magazine, the masthead is completely white with a minor grey drop shadow to it. This merges the masthead with the plain white background which portrays a neutral, more grown up effect. This is used to portray a more formal tone which represents the target audience of older males (above the age of 25) who are seen as middle class to upper class. This connotes a more serious tone to the magazine which therefore reflects a more serious audience. This is different to the Top of the Pops magazine where it has a more lighter tone or less serious magazine cover, perfect for a younger audience.

Within the Top of the Pops magazine, the main image of the magazine on the front cover is of a female surrounded by pink text. The main image is also behind the pink sparkly masthead, drawing more attention to the masthead compared to the image. The main image is also surrounded by pink text draw attention to the text rather than the image. But the contents of the image (a pop idol posing for a shot in colour) connotes a softer, more child like feel to the cover, therefore representing the target audience of younger females. Whereas in the Mojo cover, the main image is in front of the masthead which portrays a more formal or professional or formal tone. This is also represented through the use of the image in monochrome colours. These factors represent the target audience as mature, formal people of an older age compared to the younger female audience of the Tops of the Pops magazine as portrayed by the imagery on the cover.
