Summer 2018 Mock DIRT (music)
Question 2:
Q) Explain one way in which music videos use media language to differ from each other. Refer to one example of contrasting media language in two music videos you have studied to support your answer.
A) In the music video for the song, Not Letting Go, by Tinie Tempah and Jess Glynne, mise-en-scene is used to portray females as objects of desire for males on scene and in the audience. This is achieved through costumes and camera shots and movements.
This is shown through the imaging of females in the video wearing certain clothes and the camera types involved. The cloths that are worn by females on screen are 'revealing'. This combined with the medium-long shot shows off the female in question.
Although, in the other music video, Picking Up The Pieces, by Paloma Faith, the clothes used in the video is different to Not Letting Go. The clothes worn by the main woman, Paloma Faith, are formal cloths which portrays her as an independant woman. This combined withe full body shots of her gives her a powerful status in the music video.
Question 4:
Q) Refer to Extract 1 in the insert. Analyse the representation of musicians in Extract 1, which is from MOJO.

A) The representation of musicians in the extract 1 is done in various ways.
- One way this is done is through the monochrome colour scheme. This colour scheme involves black, white, red and yellow colours which can connote that most musicians are males due to the fact that the colours used are mainly stereotypically male colours.
- Another way colour scheme is used is focusing on the black and white (monochrome) part of the colour scheme. This could connote depression among people. The could represent the target audience of teens - which are most well known for having depression - which is mainly aimed at men.
- A final way in which this is done is the facial expression of the subject of the magazine. The facial expression shown by the camera represents him as a rebellious character. This would portray the audience as rebellious teens mainly of male gender.
