Lego Movie Narative

Equilibrium: Russian theorist, Tzvetan Todorov, suggests that all narratives follow a three part structure. They begin with equilibrium, where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution, when equilibrium is restored.

Disruptions: Disruptions in the story are events or occurrences that affect or put off the equilibrium. This in this is usually in the middle of the cycle in the narrative structure.

Resolutions: A resolution is where all of the story and the characters lives return to normal or when they learn to live - or adapt - to the new equilibrium

New Equilibrium: Equilibrium definition. A condition in which all influences acting cancel each other, so that a static or balanced situation results. In physics, equilibrium results from the cancellation of forces acting on an object.

In The Film:
Equilibrium:
  • Emmet is following the rules and obeys Lord Buisiness "Everything Is Awesome"
  • Emmet accepts the new lifestyle in CloudCookoLand
  • Emmet becomes a master builder and everything is - yet again - "Awesome"
Disruptions:
  • Emmet looses his instructions and - un-intentionally -  finds the piece of resistance
  • Emmet finds Wild Style and they run from the police of Lord Business
  • Lord Business attacks CloudCookoLand
Resolutions:
  • Emmet saves the master builders and the whole of the lego kingdoms
