Tension
How is tension and suspense created through media language in the TV scene within The Conjuring 2?
Within the scene, there is
use of digetic sound of thunder and lightning. The use of lightning in this
scene signifies something bad. Lightning usually has negative connotations in movies and in this case, when the lightning strikes, there is a close up shot of the TV screen turning to static. When this occurs, the girl in the scene gets out of the 'safety' of her chair and tries to fix the TV.
Next, after hitting the TV in an attempt to fix it, the static stops and the screen is blank. Then it goes to an over the shoulder shot with the girl looking at the reflection of the screen where an unknown man is sitting in the single person seat where the remote was previously.
Next comes to a variation of swish pan, 1-2 shots looking at the remote and back to the girl. This is also double upped with the remote floating in the chair where the 'invisible' man is and suddenly, it drops. After a few rotations of these shots, the mysterious man is behind the TV and 'jumps' at the girl shouting "MY HOUSE!". The girl curls up in a ball on the floor and screams. After this, the TV returns to normal.
