There are 2 categories of sound in film. Diegetic and Non-Diegetic.

Diegetic are sounds that the characters can hear

Non-Diegetic are sounds that the characters can't hear but the audience can. (it adds atmosphere and adds emotion)

Examples

Diegetic: Dialogue, Ambient Sound and Sound Effects

Non-Diegetic: Music, Voice Over and Sound Effects
